Grok’s Big Slide: Turns Out Snark Doesn't Pay the Bills

May 29, 2026

So Elon's whole deal with creating a grumpy teen-like chatbot seems to be falling a bit flat, mainly because people have started to tune out. While other tech companies are still busy trying to be helpful, Grok is seeing its download numbers absolutely plummet, with recent stats showing that downloads of the app dropped nearly 60% in April, down from the peak of 20 million users in January to a lonely 8 million.

That January surge didn't exactly come about from students looking for homework assistance, it was mostly from a bizarre "nudification" trend that had people making all sorts of dodgy pictures using the AI at an insane pace. But the second that X got serious about stopping the gross stuff and started charging money to use the feature, the crowd instantly disappeared. It's really tough to keep a party going when you start charging people to get in the door, especially when they used to be able to do all sorts of things for free.

Burning Through Cash Like a Bonfire

Meanwhile, the finances over at xAI don't seem to be doing any better, as the company is reportedly burning through a staggering $1 billion each month just to keep things running. Musk is throwing a massive amount of money at huge data centers and hardware in an effort to compete with the established players in the industry, but it's an incredibly risky bet, as most companies would rather deal with someone like Claude or Gemini than a bot designed to be "anti-woke" and deliberately rebellious.

Even the atmosphere in the office isn't much to write home about after a bunch of key engineers left in March, Musk ended up admitting that they hadn't even built the system correctly in the first place. That's a bit embarrassing to hear after investing millions, and even though they're trying to build the whole thing again from scratch under new management, it's not clear that this new version is going to generate any real excitement.

Looking for a Side Hustle in Space

Since Grok isn't going to be winning any popularity awards anytime soon, xAI is already looking for alternative revenue streams and has even struck a deal with Anthropic to use their "Colossus I" data center. There are even wilder plans underway to integrate AI into space through a partnership with SpaceX, which suggests that xAI might be ditching the chatbot idea entirely and becoming more of a "landlord" for other tech projects.

Even if they can't build the perfect car, they might be able to own the toll road. Sending data centers into orbit via satellites sounds like a science fiction plot, but it could be the only way to save the company. If you're interested in seeing whether they'll actually pull off this "space-compute" idea, keep an eye on SpaceX's mission updates for the latest news.

What Happens to X Now?

The bigger issue here isn't that the app is boring, but what it means for X as a whole. The primary function of the platform is now that of a giant data buffet for Grok to feast on. If Grok is a complete flop, then X's purpose is questionable, especially when you consider that usage has already dropped by 15% in places like Europe.

If Musk decides to pull the plug on Grok altogether, he may have to sell off X's data to the highest bidder just to keep the lights on. This is a pretty bleak outlook for a site that was originally envisioned as a life-changing new way of communicating.
