Instagram’s New Morph Feature: Because Reality is Boring

April 10, 2026

Meta has decided that your vacation pictures are officially not interesting enough for the modern attention span. Instead of allowing people to swipe through your brunch pictures like a normal human being, Instagram is rolling out a feature that will use generative AI to stitch your pictures together. Basically, AI will morph your pictures into the next, creating a seamless video. It’s like origami, only instead of paper, it’s your face and the amount of server power they’re willing to dedicate to your account.

If you have yet to experience this, the new feature should appear in your stories gallery where you select the pictures, agree to allow the AI to use your data, and voila! The results are in. You can read the official explanation of the terms and conditions on the Instagram Help Center, but the basic idea is that they’re trying to put an end to static pictures and replace them with fever dreams created by an algorithm.

From Slideshow to Body Horror

The idea behind the feature is to create smoother stories and reels. Why bother making the transition yourself when an algorithm can do it for you? It’s the dream of every lazy creator out there. However, there’s a very thin line between smooth transitions and complete body horror. If you’ve spent five minutes watching AI videos, you know the human body, finger counts, and physics are all questionable.

Instagram has yet to roll out an actual output showing this all working flawlessly, which is... suspicious. Some early results will likely feature your dog dissolving into a sunset or your best friend growing an extra limb mid-transition. If you’re curious about what this tech looks like when it goes wrong, I recommend checking out some of the AI fail compilation videos that have been plaguing the internet lately. Use this feature at your own risk, or you might accidentally turn your gender reveal video into a David Lynch film.

The Big AI Push

This is Meta’s need to justify the billions they’re pouring into this tech and Mark Zuckerberg is currently obsessed with making AI a part of your daily social fibre. We’ve already been treated to those stickers and chatbots nobody actually uses, and now we’re getting "content creation" for those who don’t actually want to create content.

By pushing you to download these morphed stories and re-uploading them as Reels, Instagram is trying to boost their video metrics with fake videos. It’s a way to keep you engaged on the app for longer, even if the "video" you’re watching is literally just a trippy slideshow. I recommend checking out Meta’s AI Terms of Service before you start using this feature, so you know exactly how much of your face you’re willing to give away for a five-second video.

Is It Actually Useful?

If you enjoy being an early adopter and don't mind an extra limb showing up in your feed every now and then, give it a shot. It’s an entertaining little toy for ten minutes, but let’s get real here; we're all just going to use this to send weird videos to our friends at 2:00 AM.

It has the potential to be a legitimate tool as the technology advances, but for now, it’s just an online curiosity. Just don’t be surprised if your seamless transition looks like a glitch in the Matrix instead of a professional edit. If you’re looking to enhance your Stories without the hallucinating bot, you’re probably best off sticking with the basics and putting in a little work.
