The feature is pretty simple: if a kid goes down the rabbit hole, a push notification dings on the parent’s phone that summarizes the situation and provides some links to mental health resources. But, of course, there’s a catch. This isn’t an opt-in feature, and parents have to be voluntarily enrolled in the Instagram Parental Supervision program, which assumes that the teenager hasn’t already blocked their parents or created a "finsta" account.

The AI Bot is Also a Narc

It appears that teens aren’t just searching for things on the internet; they’re actually confiding in Meta’s AI chatbot, because what is a "healthy coping mechanism" like confiding in a soulless algorithm? Meta has admitted that teenagers are increasingly asking their AI bot questions about self-harm, so they’re introducing parental alerts for that as well, which means that the AI bot is no longer just a digital assistant. Whereas the AI is supposed to be trained to answer safely and assist, it will now also serve as a whistleblower, which is an interesting change of focus for a company that has been trying to convince us for years that their platforms were harmless online playgrounds.

Now, they’re basically admitting that their platforms are dark places, but at least they’ll send your mom a text about it later, which seems like more of a liability shield than a solution.

A Very Convenient Change of Heart
